The Equine Digestive System and Diet

One of the many ways of categorizing animals is based on their diet and digestive physiology. Horses are categorized as non-ruminant herbivores. Non-ruminant herbivores derive their nutrient requirements from plant sources, the majority of which comprised fibrous plants such as grasses. Roughages such as grass and hay contain varying amounts of both soluble carbohydrates and insoluble carbohydrates. Individual species have varying abilities to digest these carbohydrates.

The primary difference between soluble and insoluble carbohydrates is not what they are made up of, but rather how they are put together. Both soluble and insoluble carbohydrates are made up of long strings of glucose molecules, but the bonding in soluble versus insoluble carbohydrates is different. Horses posses the enzymes to break the bonds between soluble carbohydrates, but do NOT posses the enzymes to break the different bonding between the glucose molecules that hold the insoluble carbohydrates together.

Microorganisms and Why ColicGuard Works

So, over time, horses developed a symbiotic relationship with hundreds of different species of microorganisms that produce enzymes which are capable of breaking the bonds of insoluble carbohydrates, thereby making the food available to both the digestive microorganisms and the host animal (the horse). Specifically, the breakdown products of this microbial fermentation are the volatile fatty acids from which the animal derives the majority of its energy requirements. This kind of microbial fermentation occurs to a greater or lesser extent in the digestive system of any animal that eats foods of plant origin.

These symbiotic microbial populations, however, are not always stable. Fluctuations in the internal environment such as changes in temperature, pH, hydration status, substrate availability or the presence of antibiotics, other medications or chemicals may also affect – or even destroy – the microorganism population in a horse’s digestive tract. At the very least, shifts in the population can affect digestive efficiency. At worst, large die-offs of certain species can release endotoxins, which may in turn contribute to colic, enteritis or laminitis. Regular use of ColicGuard in a horse’s diet can avoid these consequences.

For horses that don’t undergo a lot of stress, maintaining a reasonably healthy and stable microbial population is usually not a problem. However, horses that undergo stress such as: being transported, intensive competition training, becoming dehydrated, breeding stallions and mares, may undergo internal changes which can temporarily make the environment in the horse’s digestive tract less than ideal for the microorganisms.

The Role of Probiotics

ColicGuard is a freeze-dried culture (which later reactivates) composed of some of the ‘friendly’ microorganisms that normally exist in a horse’s digestive tract which are likely to be disturbed by stress. These are Enterococcus Faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum.
