EPM – Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis – is a degenerative, neurological disease produced by an intracellular parasite, protozoa S. neurona, which is transferred to horses via Opossum droppings. More than 50 percent (and in some areas as high as 90%) of horses in the United States may have been exposed to the organism that causes EPM. Fortunately, only a very small percentage of horses which have been exposed to this organism will ever develop the disease we call EPM.

Our herbal formula contains herbs with anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting, anti-protozoal, calming, stress-reducing, analgesic and detoxifying properties. Also promotes lymphatic cleansing and muscle function.

750 grams (Approx. 1 lb. 10.5 oz.) Approximately 60 scoops per jar. Refer to dosage tab below for more information. Our Signature Line includes free shipping. While other companies may offer similar products, many of their herbs are not organic. Our formulas also have a much higher concentration of herbs per dose ensuring greater effectiveness. They also contain unique herbs not found in other products.

EPM is NOT transmitted from horse to horse. Why one horse gets EPM from opossum droppings and another one does not, is unknown. One of the widely acknowledged factors seems to be a weakened immune system. Therefore, whether preventatively or complimentary alongside or after drug treatment, supporting the equine immune system is essential in the recovery of horses with EPM. Pau D‘ Arco has shown to be a powerful herb to boost the immune system while at same time having anti-protozoal properties. Eleuthero is an immune stimulant and adaptogenic (see below).

The dramatic overall symptoms produce additional stress on the body which in return can weaken the immune system more. Breaking this downward stress spiral can dramatically help a horse with EPM. Adaptogenic (stress-reducing) herbs such as Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng) have shown to be powerful remedies.

While nothing will remove the protozoa from the body, we can try to reduce its impact. The disease is a master in disguise and symptoms can be very unspecific. They usually include neurological problems, ataxia and muscular-skeletal soreness. Calming and supporting the nervous system in a horse with EPM can help the horse cope during the recovery process much better. Lemon Balm has a soothing effect on the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. It will reduce anxiety and agitation. Furthermore, it has the added effect of anti-spasmodic properties helping to reduce signs of mild colic, muscle pain, cramping and twitching.

In a horse infected with EPM, the whole body suffers from inflammation and pain. Herbs with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties can help significantly. White Willow Bark (Salix Alba) has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It is ideal to battle signs resembling muscle- and joint pain, rheumatism, fever, colic and cramps.

The body might get overwhelmed trying to eliminate toxic waste produced by the infection. It is essential to support liver function (Dandelion Leaf, Milk Thistle) and the lymphatic system in particular to detoxify from the parasitic toxins as well as from drug metabolites (Cleavers, Calendula). Cleavers is also very high in Vitamin C, which helps the immune system.

Anise and Stevia are added to enhance palatability. Stevia serves as a natural, sugar-free sweetener. Anise is also an appetite stimulant.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR HORSES WITH EPM OR EPM-LIKE SYMPTOMS:

EPM and any health challenges resembling EPM require a truly multi-factorial holistic approach for feeding and management. The following are recommendations from our staff Veterinarian and Nutritionist:

  • Provide ample clean water. If you prefer Automatic water feeders, make sure they hold at least a gallon of water.
  • Add 2-4 tablespoons of sea salt per day to your horses feed. We offer “Pure Unrefined Sea Salt“.
  • The main reason for EPM infections is believed to be a weakened immune system. Strengthen your horses immune system with our “Vyrex” or “ImmunoBoost“.
  • Your horse might have an increased need for full spectrum amino acids to protect and re-build muscle tissue. Therefore you might consider feeding a 30-percent protein ration balancer (Two pounds per 1,000 horse daily).
  • The stress produced by disease increases the need for minerals and vitamins. Consider adding our “Organic Icelandic Kelp” to your horses diet.

Have patience! Picky eaters can be a challenge. Go slow and easy and work on convincing your horse the herbs are good for them!

Feb. 27th my husband and I noticed that our 5 yr old mare was struggling to walk and was obviously in pain. We had never heard of EPM, but the veterinarian diagnosed her 2 days later. He put her on a 14 day medication treatment. For years the natural holistic approach to health, has been a way of life for me. During the first few days of her treatment I was searching frantically for a quality, safe, natural holistic approach to build her immune system because I understood that the (much needed) aggressive medication would further compromise her weakened immune system; when I came across this website I knew that I had found what I was looking for!!! We ordered the ProtoEase and without delay they rushed it out! Soon after I ordered their other products that would help support and build her immune system. Due to what the vet had told us we were so surprised to see such a quick improvement! Because she was not able to get up on her own, my husband and I had to take turns watching her at night to make sure that she didn’t lie down too long and to help her up. After 7 weeks now she can get up on her own and prance like a deer! We’re thoroughly convinced these products have saved her life! We thank God for The Holistic Horse and their quality products!

My 21 year old gelding started having problems controlling his rear legs. He would fall down and have difficulty getting up. My vet diagnosed him with EPM and he was started on Marquis and Rebalance. He made some improvement , but I was hoping for a better recovery . I was terrified that I might lose him to this horrible disease. I began to search for other treatment plans and thankfully found The Holistic Horse. I purchased the Proto Ease, and a few of the other recommended supplements, and within a couple of weeks, there was a huge improvement in his mobility. After I finished my container of Proto Ease, he was doing so well that I did not reorder a second container. Shortly after that, his condition started to deteriorate. I realized that the only thing different was that I was no longer giving him the Proto Ease . I purchased it and started him back on it, and the results were astounding! He is now almost completely sound. I have even been able to ride him at a walk in the arena. When the vet came out for a recheck, she was amazed at how much he had improved. I told her about The Holistic Horse, so that other people could use it to treat their horses who suffer from EPM. I am so grateful that I found this product. I will continue to keep him on it, so he stays in optimal health.

I have a 24 year old Belgian gelding that I got from a rescue. He would come in from the pasture walking sideways and looked like he was drunk. I searched my pasture for toxic weeds, pulled out anything mildly poisonous, and treated him for Lyme disease. He would improve for 2-3 weeks and then the ataxia would return. He fell in the pasture and ripped open his hind quarters. I started using Proto Ease and he has improved significantly. It took 6 to 8 weeks to get him stabilized. He receives 2 scoops twice a day. He has not had any additional incidents with his balance and walks much straighter. He will still lean to one side if he is tired or runs around too much. I also give him bee pollen and kelp. This horse would have put down if it wasn’t for your product. He’s a sweet old guy and I want to keep him around as long as possible. Your products are wonderful!
