Product Description

Slippery Elm Powder has been used for hundreds of years to treat irritation and ulceration of mucosal membranes within the animal gut.

Slippery Elm Powder will help completely repair the mucus lining of any affected area and can be used for horses by healing the lining of the whole intestinal tract.

Slippery Elm Powder is rich in mucilage and can be used as a food or a medicine. It soothes inflammation both externally and internally. It can also be used as an effective poultice to bring relief and heal wounds, infected cuts and splinters, as well as easing localized pain.

ULCERS

Endoscopic procedure reveals nearly 90 percent of examined racehorses and up to 60 percent of performance horses to have gastric ulcers.

Clinical signs of ulcers:
Adult Horses

1. Poor appetite
2. Colitis
3. Decreased performance
4. Attitude change
5. Poor body condition
6. Weight loss
7. Overall dullness

Ulcers, scouring (diarrhea) and colitis are difficult problems to tackle. Most animals, even people, respond very well to Slippery Elm Powder to help protect the stomach and bowel lining. It is traditionally used to control scouring especially in foals and older horses.

In some cases over growth of the wrong bacteria in the gut is a very important factor. According to research Slippery Elm Powder is effective at killing off those bacteria that cause some ulcer problems, while leaving beneficial bacteria largely untouched. Almost all cases respond well to a regime that includes Slippery Elm Powder within a few days and then the bowel lining can begin to regenerate. Probiotics like our Pro Guard are worthwhile too, as well as an anti-oxidant, immune-support formula like our Omni WormGuard Plus complement the treatment with Slippery Elm Powder.

Our Organic Slippery Elm Bark Powder comes in a two pound resealable package. One 2 pound order is enough for 30 days at 1/3rd cup per day.

I purchased a 3-y-o Arabian filly and had her transported from MN to AZ. This was a big change for her. She was colicky for months while I tried to figure out what was causing it. I suppose she probably had ulcers, but I never had her scoped and I did not want to just throw gastroguard at it, like the previous owner suggested and had probably done to her. She wanted to bolt her food no matter what I fed. I had transitioned her from grass/alfalfa to more Bermuda. Wetting the hay helped. And I gave her soaked pellets. But I couldn’t even get her out to the RC and she would want to go down. She finally got an impaction and had to be tubed and oiled. I ordered Slippery Elm, started a probiotic, and now feed only from a slow feed (1″ or 1.5″) hay net. Once I started her on the Slippery Elm, the change was dramatic and almost immediate. She has not shown any signs of colic and is so much more relaxed, engaged, and happy about training. A super sensitive, super smart horse for sure. I attribute her 180-degree turn-around to this product.

I keep this slippery elm powder on hand for both my horses and dogs. I add it to horse rations around times of increased biochemical, emotional, and physical stress like with vaccines and deworming, when we travel, and during a clinic. My Arab gulps down any food I give her with any taste or consistency. My TB is much pickier about taste and consistency, so I soak his with more alfalfa pellets and spirulina. I add it to the dog’s bowls when their stool is too hard or too soft for any reason. Neither dog has ever turned their nose up at it. I never mix it with warm water first — I mix feed + water + slippery elm for all of my animals and let it sit for a few minutes. It’s really easy. Clears up GI issues in the dogs within one feeding. The horses seem to benefit constitutionally and manage stress much better! Quality product that I highly recommend having as part of your wholistic “medicine cabinet.”
